Foreign leaders congratula­te Najib on polls victory

KUALA LUMPUR: Foreign leaders have sent their congratula­tory messages to Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on his victory in the 13th General Election (GE13).

Four leaders who had called the prime minister to congratula­te him yesterday were the prime ministers of the United Kingdom ( UK) David Cameron, Yingluck Shinawatra (Thailand), Lee Hsien Loong ( Singapore) and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

At 1pm yesterday, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard called on Najib to convey her best wishes.

The prime minister spoke with Gillard for about 10 minutes after chairing a special meeting with Barisan Nasional ( BN) members of parliament at the Putra World Trade Centre ( PWTC) here.

Najib is also expected to receive calls from several other world leaders yesterday.

The GE13 saw Barisan Nasional being returned to power when the coalition won 133 of the 222 parliament­ary seats to form the new federal government.

On Monday, Najib took the oath of office as prime minister before Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah.

Accordingt­oastatemen­treleased by the British High Commission here yesterday, Cameron had called Najib to congratula­te him personally on winning the general election.

“The British prime minister personally conveyed his congratula­tions to Malaysian Prime Minister (Datuk Seri) Najib Tun Razak in a phone conversati­on Monday night.

“PM Cameron emphasised the importance of further political and economic reform, building on efforts, thus far.

“PM Cameron added that he looked forward to strengthen­ing the UK’s bilateral relationsh­ip with Malaysia,” said the statement. — Bernama
