KUCHING: Motorcycles parked along footpaths and sidewalks in the vicinity of Padang Merdeka have become increasingly prevalent since the opening of the city’s latest shopping mall, Plaza Merdeka.

In view of this, the Kuching City North Commission (DBKU) has taken measures to moderate the number of motorcycles parked illegally here with the construction of parking spaces specially designated for motorcycles.

According to DBKU Building and Landscape Planning Service Department deputy director Mohamed Khaidir Abang,

motorcyclists can now park their motorcycles at the parking bay which is equipped with steel bars to chain up their vehicles to prevent theft.

“This facility is part of the Kuching Clean, Beautiful, Safe (CBS) Enhancement Plan initiative which was launched earlier this year,” he told reporters when met at the parking bay located in front of the Central Police Station near Plaza Merdeka here yesterday.

Khaidir also pointed out that DBKU had also constructed the same facility at Medan Niaga Satok, Main Bazaar and Gambier Street comprising of around 300 motorcycle parking spaces, estimated to cost approximately RM70,000.

“We hope that through this facility, it would create awareness among motorcyclists to park their bikes at the designated parking spots,” he said, adding that DBKU officers will also be constantly monitoring these areas to ensure that motorcyclists do not illegally park their motorcycles.
