Man remanded for alleged incest

-

KUCHING: A 42-year- old man was arrested and remanded on Tuesday for allegedly raping his underage niece, who is now 16 weeks pregnant.

The suspect, from Petra Jaya, was detained by police after the 16-yearold girl, who is a slow learner, complained to a neighbour that she had been raped by her uncle.

District police chief ACP Roslan Bek Ahmad, who confirmed the case yesterday, said the victim was immediately put under the care of the Welfare Department following her complaint, and later sent to the Sarawak General Hospital for a check-up which confirmed her pregnancy.

The suspect was subsequently arrested and has been remanded for seven days under Section 376 of the Penal Code for further investigation.

Roslan revealed the victim had been under the care of the suspect after her mother disappeared following the death of her (victim’s) father.

In an unrelated incident, two youths were arrested following a brawl at a carpark of a private college at Jalan Bukit Mata Kuching on Tuesday night.

The fight occurred around 7.30pm and involved two groups of men who had gathered at the carpark to `discuss’ a misunderstanding between them. Police personnel from the Padungan station rushed to the scene after receiving information and apprehended the youths - both in their early 20s - as they were trying to flee with the rest of the brawlers.

The two of them were then taken to the Sarawak General Hospital for a routine check- up before being held in the lockup pending further investigation.
