UMS to set up Medical Emergency Response team

KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah ( UMS) is now in the process of setting up a Special Medical Emergency Response team, its Vice- Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah disclosed.

Speaking to reporters after officiatin­g at a workshop on the awareness of managing emergencie­s and disasters, Dr Mohd Harun said members of the team would comprise of staff from UMS School of Medicine.

With the setting up of the Medical Emergency team, UMS can assist the state government and the public in any emergencie­s, he said, adding that medical students will also be included in the team so that they get the relevant exposure.

“We are not just talking about natural disasters but also like the intrusion incident that happened in Lahad Datu a couple of months ago. That was an emergency that required assistance. We are taking a proactive step in setting up the response team,” he said.

Dr Mohd Harun added that they are now in the process of preparing the working paper on the team which will be based at the UMS' teaching hospital when it is set up.

In his speech earlier, Dr Mohd Harun said the workshop was timely as it provided participan­ts the opportunit­y to share their expertise and knowledge on emergency response.

It also helps to increase their awareness and understand­ing about the safety procedures in handling emergencie­s and disaster, he said, adding that with the knowledge, they can also strengthen what is needed to streamline all activities that concerns a disaster or emergency situation. — Bernama
