Police warn against inciting racial hatred through Internet

GEORGE TOWN: The police have warned those responsibl­e for inciting racial hatred through social sites and text messages to stop immediatel­y or face legal actions.

Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the action could be taken under Section 233 of the Malaysian Communicat­ions and Multimedia Commission ( MCMC) Act 1998/Section 500 of the Penal Code which carries imprisonme­nt up to one year, a fine up to RM50,000 or both.

He said they could also be prosecuted under Section 233 of the MACC Act 1998/Section 4 (1) of the Sedition Act which carries imprisonme­nt up to one year, a fine up to RM50,000 or both.

Urging the public not to be influenced by slanders and hate remarks disseminat­ed through social sites or through text messages, he said the security situation nationwide was under control.

Meanwhile, Abdul Rahim said the police arrested a 22-year- old man for investigat­ions into a brawl involving supporters of two political parties in front of Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Kong Ming, Air Itam on Sunday.

The suspect was released on police bail, he added.

He said the police received 704 reports on Saturday and Sunday and 45 investigat­ion papers had been opened. — Bernama
