9,000 suspected Nospan pills seized

-

SARIKEI: Police have seized 9,000 tablets believed to be Nospan following the arrest of a man and a woman behind the express bus terminal here on Wednesday.

Deputy district police chief DSP Dominic Josip told a press conference yesterday that the 20-year- old man and 28-year- old woman were arrested around 8.45am.

Upon checking the package they were carrying, police found six plastic bottles containing suspicious tablets believed to be Nospan or dextromethorphan.

Dominic said the tablets would be sent to the relevant agency for analysis, adding that the seizure was the biggest for the narcotics section this year.

“We are now investigating them for an offence under Section 30( 3) of the Poisons Act 1952, which carries a maximum fine of RM3,000 or one year imprisonment upon conviction,” he said.

Police have been granted a 14day remand to carry out their investigation on the suspects, who have tested positive for drugs.

“We view the effort to curb the drug- related menace in the community very seriously. We take into consideration the negative effects of drug addiction on the youngsters as much as we are concerned with the evergrowing number involved,” he said.

Nospan is said to be the most common drug abused by youths here as a hallucinogen.

It is actually a medication used as a cough suppressant.
