KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will be the guest- of-honour at Sarawak Dayak National Union’s (SDNU) appreciation dinner before Gawai Dayak celebration this year.

Its vice-president Anthony Banyan said Najib had confirmed his attendance to the appreciation dinner and the organising committee was still finalising the date with the Prime Minister’s Department.

“The dinner will be organised by SDNU as an umbrella body of all the Dayak ethnic groups in Sarawak. Besides the prime minister, Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem and the members of the state cabinet are also invited,” he told reporters after a meeting chaired by president, Tan Sri William Mawan, here yesterday.

Anthony said the appreciation dinner would be held to thank Najib who had allocated RM2 million to SDNU for it to run its educational, cultural, sports and other activities for the next three years.

He said the Dayak community was very proud that Najib had agreed to attend the dinner, adding that this was probably the first time that a prime minister attends a dinner organised by SDNU or any Dayak non- governmental organisations (NGOs).

Anthony said SDNU, as an umbrella body of the Dayak organisations in the country, will invite members all the Dayak NGOs and associations to be part of the organising committee.

Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS), which is the women wing of SDNU, will be holding its annual general meeting (AGM) at Penview Hotel here this Saturday.

“The AGM will elect new officer bearers who will serve for the next three years. Before this, the term of office was two years but after SDNU amended its constitution, maybe they also amended their constitution to be the same with SDNU that is three years.”

Nomination for SIDS committee member posts is open to all SIDS members.

The current SIDS chairperson is Dato Sri Empiang Jabu. She is expected to remain as the chairperson to serve for another term.Anthony was accompanied by publicity chief, Ganchai Jinta, at the press conference yesterday.
