Hunting trip turns fatal when man shot

MIRI: A 34-year- old man was killed after hunting with friends in the jungle of Kelulit, Bekenu.

Miri police chief ACP Gan Tian Kee confirmed receiving a report on the incident, where the man is said to have been shot after he was mistaken for an animal on Wednesday night.

“The deceased has been identified as Sulayman Sahak from Kampung Keluru Tengah Bekenu,” Gan said yesterday.

“The group had brought along one shotgun during the hunting session.”

When they arrived at the jungle, they reportedly went in four different directions.

One of the hunters is said to have mistakenly fired at Sulayman, seriously injuring him in the face and chest.

However, he somehow managed to walk out of the jungle, where he was found covered in blood by two villagers who happened to pass by.

They immediatel­y drove him to the Bekenu Health Clinic.

Due to the seriousnes­s of Sulayman’s injuries, he was later transporte­d to Miri Hospital.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital around 1.30am.

“The deceased’s three friends, who had gone with him for the hunting session, have surrendere­d themselves to facilitate the police investigat­ion,” added Gan.

The case is being investigat­ed under the Fire Arms Act 1960.
