Manufactur­ing sales up 12.3 per cent in January

KUALA LUMPUR: Manufactur­ing sales in January 2014 rose 12.3 per cent to RM56.1 billion from RM50 billion reported in the same month last year.

The Statistics Department said sales value had increased by 1.8 per cent or RM1 billion compared with the preceding month.

“The sales value in December 2013 has been revised positive 4.8 per cent year-on-year to record RM55.1 billion,” said the department in its monthly manufactur­ing statistics yesterday.

On a seasonally adjusted monthon-month basis, the sales value in January 2014 increased by 0.7 per cent, said the department.

It said total employees engaged in the manufactur­ing sector for the month was 1,031,761 persons, an increase of 1.3 per cent compared with the preceding month.

Meanwhile, on a year-on-year basis, the number of employees increased grew by 0.8 per cent or 8,548

persons as compared to 1,023,213 persons in January 2013.

The department said total employees in December 2013 has been revised negative 0.4 per cent year-on-year to record 1,018,383 persons.

On a month-on-month basis, salaries and wages paid in January 2014 decreased by 4.2 per cent to register RM2.9 billion.

Meanwhile, the total amount paid in January 2014 increased by 9.3 per cent or RM245.8 million as compared with the correspond­ing month of the previous year, said the department.
