Indiscriminate dumping of rubbish in MJC causes concern

-

KUCHING: MJC Batu Kawah New Township has somewhat become an eye sore with piles of rubbish found in drains at several locations around the area.

According to Public Action founder Augustine Chan, the drains have become an alternative garbage dump by irresponsible people for convenient disposal of rubbish such as used plastic bottles and polystyrene containers.

“I have received several complaints from the public on rubbish being dumped in drains at MJC area particularly Lorong Persiaran Bandar Baru Batu Kawah,” he told The Borneo Post when met yesterday.

“I went there to check out the place myself on Tuesday and found that some of the drains were clogged due to the build-up of the rubbish.”

Chan also stressed that throwing rubbish in the drains will cause blockage and make the drains mosquito breeding grounds.

“Stagnant water in clogged drains is dangerous as mosquitoes will breed there and this might cause dengue outbreaks here if the situation persists,” he said.

Though Chan will bring this matter to the attention of Padawan Municipal Council ( MPP), he advised the public to change their attitude and stop throwing rubbish indiscriminately.

“The councils and relevant agencies can do their part but this will be an ongoing problem if the public continue to dump their rubbish wherever they please,” he reiterated.

Chan set up the Public Action in October last year as a voluntary organisation to address public complaints on common city issues such as clogged drains and pothole-ridden roads.

The public coming across such issues here are advised to call Chan at 012- 8078426.
