Two men sentenced to death for drug traffickin­g

GEORGE TOWN: Two men were sentenced to death by hanging by the High Court, here, yesterday after being tried on two charges involving drug traffickin­g three years ago.

Judge Datuk Zamani Abdul Rahim made the decision after hearing the defence from the two accused, PK Saravana Kumar and Ung Sing Seng, and taking into considerat­ion public interest.

On the first and second charge, Saravana Kumar, 33, and Ung, 50, were accused of traffickin­g 266.8 gm of heroin and 19.9 gm of monoacetyl­morphine at Mutiara Court, 33- 02- 02, Lorong Delima 20, Green Lane, here, at 10.20pm on May 23, 2011.

They were charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

Both were called to make their defence on Dec 20, 2013.

Zamani also sentenced Saravana Kumar and Ung to one year’s jail from their date of arrest, May 23, 2011, for possessing scheduled poisons.

They were charged with having 42,117.2 gm of caffeine and 294.9 gm of chloroquin­e without a permit and valid approval from the authoritie­s.

The offence under Section 9(1) of the Poisons Act 1952 ( Revised 1989) was committed at the same place, date and time.

DPP Siti Fatimah Talib appeared for the prosecutio­n while the two accused were represente­d by lawyer S Rethinakum­ar. — Bernama
