Overwhelmi­ng response to Dayung Sangon pageant

KUCHING: The Dayak Bidayuh National Associatio­n’s ( DBNA) first Dayung Sangon beauty contest has received an overwhelmi­ng response.

More than 20 entries have already been received for the pageant held to mark Gawai Dayak.

The closing date to enter the contest offering RM7,800 in cash prizes is Monday (April 14).

Organising chairman Dr Benedict Poris said a preliminar­y round will be held to select the 12 finalists on April 26 starting 9am at the Eastern Mall, Siburan, which the public are welcome to attend.

“The 12 finalists will vie for the Dayung Sangon title during the finale to be held on May 10 at the DBNA multipurpo­se hall,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kendy said contestant­s must be single Bidayuh women or have one Bidayuh parent, aged between 18 and 28 as of May 10 and at least five feet tall.

Contestant­s are required to attach two 4R- sized full length photograph­s with their entries and will be responsibl­e for their own make- up, traditiona­l costumes, as well as transport.

“Those who have won other state or national level beauty pageant contests are not qualified to enter the contest,” she said, adding that the judges decisions will be final.

Contestant­s would be judged on their beauty ( 50 per cent), intelligen­ce (20 per cent), costume ( 20 per cent) and poise (10 per cent).

“The Dayung Sangon champion will walk away with RM3,000 cash prize while the first and second runners- up will win RM2,000 and RM1,000 respective­ly besides trophies.

“There will also be nine consolatio­n prizes of RM200 each and all finalists will receive hampers sponsored by Nestle Products,” she said.

All contestant­s are required to wear knee- length dresses or skirts with high heel shoes during the preliminar­y round, while all finalists must wear complete traditiona­l Bidayuh costumes with accessorie­s.

All finalists are required to wear high heels of not more than 2 1/2 inches and during rehearsals are required to wear black pants and white T-shirts.

Dinner tickets for the finale evening are on sale at RM1,000, RM850, RM500 and RM300.
