KUCHING: Students are urged to acquire as much knowledge as possible in order to meet the challenges and needs of the 21st century.

Saying this was Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem’s wife, Puan Sri Dato Jamilah Anu, when officiating at SM Sains’ academic excellence award.

She said academic achievement, though important, was not everything.

“Teachers need to do more in preparing students to deal with challenges in this globalised world through solid and wellrounded education.

“Teachers need to consider a paradigm shift in the teaching and learning approaches to encourage students to think creatively and innovatively.”

Jamilah, who is also advisor of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association, said that nurturing, guidance and encouragement in all aspects of life from an early stage was crucial to ensure that the children continue to achieve excellence. She reminded students to be responsible in acquiring and expanding their knowledge by exploring beyond the textbook.

“Take the learning opportunity in school to explore your potentials to the maximum and do not waste time on things that are not necessary and avoid negative influences that can disrupt your study and life.”

Other than teachers, Jamilah said the government, community and parents also played important role in the child’s educational and developmental process.

She also urged parents to be more proactive by supporting and working closely with school’s PTA to support and help the children to perform better in school.

Later, Jamilah pledged a RM5,000 contribution from her daughter, former student of the school, in support of a new alumni to be set up soon. She also announced an additional RM10,000 grant from the Chief Minister’s Office to the PTA.

Meanwhile, 55 students who scored 8As in the 2013 PMR and 18 who scored straight As’ in the 2013 received the Excellence Awards in recognition and appreciation of their achievements.

Principal Salbiah Seman was among those present at the function.
