World acclaimed Bayanihan dance coming to Kuching

KUCHING: Kuching will host the spectacula­r dance performanc­e of the Bayanihan on Saturday (June 14) at the Imperial Hotel Grand Ballroom.

The mission of this world acclaimed Nat ional Dance Company of the Phi lippines is to research and preserve the indigenous Phi l ippine art forms in music, dance, costumes and folklore and to evolve them into repertoire­s suited for contempora­ry theatre and to promote Internatio­nal goodwill.

Bayanihan has mounted 14 major world tours, each lasting six months to a year, covering six continents, 66 countries and 700 cities.

This event is jointly organised by the Soroptimis­t Internatio­nal Club Kuching, the Filipino Commu ni t y o f Kuchi n g , thePhilipp­ine Embassy, Kuala Lumpur and the Social Welfare Council of Sarawak.

Soroptimis­t is an internatio­nal NGO working to transform the lives of women and girls through bet ter access to education, economic empowermen­t, while also protecting their rights and eliminatin­g violence against them.

This global volunteer movement has anetwork of over 80,000 club members in127 countries.

Proceeds from this concert will go to various community projects of the Soroptimis­t Internatio­nal Kuch i n g , p r i m a r i ly its commitment to educate women and children in rural villages of Sarawak with l i fe ski l ls training, to generate an income for a better standard of living for their families.

Some proceeds wil l a lso go to help support chi ldren in the Philippine­s who were lef t orphaned fol lowing the devastatin­g Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.
