Baru calls on police to probe drug abuse
KUCHING: The drug problem in Lawas and Ba Kelalan has not improved generally, which calls for a more serious effort from the police.
Ba Kelalan assemblyman Baru Bian opined that the problem was compounded by the involvement of the police, and hoped an investigation would be carried out.
He told a press conference here yesterday that he was aware of the matter, but would leave the investigation to the police.
“As I talk now, there are transactions (drug) going on now, but it is up to the police to carry out investigation,” Baru said.
He even told reporters the location of the building where such transactions took place.
According to him, the drug problem was not only confined to Lawas but also occurred in a town in Indonesia.
This, he said, was indicated to him during his recent visit to the Indonesian town of Long Bawan, where he was informed by the authorities there that they also faced similar predicament.
Long Bewan is a neighbouring town to Ba Kelalan.
“I was told by the authorities in Long Berawan that the number one enemy faced by the people there is Syabu which comes from Lawas,” Baru, who is state Parti Keadilan Rakyat ( PKR) chief said.
According to Baru, the bulk of the supply comes from Miri and Sabah.
He also told reporters seven Sarawakians had been arrested for drug possession at the border with Long Bawan.
Meanwhile, Baru is initiating an anti- drug day in Lawas in September, knowing the situation has not changed.
