ALMATY: Sarawak has numerous opportunities available for trade and investment in several resource-based industries which possess good investment potential for development, said Industrial Development Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

In his keynote address at the Sarawak Trade and Investment Seminar and Business Matching held at Ritz Carlton Hotel here yesterday, Awang Tengah told the Kazakhstan business community that Sarawak had resource-based industries such as halal food, palm oil based, wood based, petrochemical, ceramic and biotechnology for them to invest in.

He also noted that the state was also actively promoting the non-resources based industry in the area of shipbuilding, oil & gas support services, electronic and high- tech industries while Sarawak companies were also capable of building modern integrated housing, commercial and industrial complexes as well as building long bridges.

“We have the experience and expertise in all these infrastructure development and therefore I welcome potential investors and business people from Kazakhstan to avail themselves to the full range of opportunities that are available in Sarawak,” he assured.

The event, which was attended by some 300 Kazakhstan investors and business people from the various economic sectors, was jointly organised by Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) and Awang Tengah’s ministry which aimed to introduce the many investment opportunities in Sarawak and to explore trade and investment in Kazakhstan.

Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment and Minister of Public Utilities, said that there were a lot of potential for trade and investment between Kazakhstan and Sarawak to collaborate and develop synergies in trade, investment and education.

As Kazakhstan was one of the most rapidly growing economies as it diversified its economies and reduced dependency on natural resources, he expressed his confidence that the seminar would serve as an excellent platform for businesses from both Sarawak and Kazakhstan to get to know each other better and create new business ventures that would benefit both parties.

The recent visit to Kazakhstan by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had paved the way forward in bilateral relations between Kazakhstan and Malaysia and therefore the close relationship between the two countries would provide a firm foundation for advancing and expanding future bilateral cooperation to a new level of comprehensive partnership, he added.
