The Therapy Playroom to hold 2 training workshops

-

KUCHING: The Therapy Playroom has invited Rhythmic Movement Training ( RMT) instructor Prema Shanmugam from Kuala Lumpur to present two training workshops over this coming weekend.

Prema will be presenting Rhythmic Movement Training Level 1, ‘Focus, Organisation and Comprehension’, on June 13 and Level 2 ‘ Emotions, Memory and Behaviour’ on June 14 and 15.

Operator Sue Walker highlighted yesterday that both full- day workshops will be very ‘ handson’ to encourage participants to learn the movement patterns experientially.

“The workshops are open to anyone living or working with individuals (children or adults) facing challenges with movement, learning, memory, attention, coordination, stamina, social skills, emotional maturity or sensory integration,” she said.

“They will be of particular interest and benefit to occupational therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists, counsellors, teachers ( both mainstream and special education), early childhood workers, carers of the elderly, nurses and parents of children with special needs,” she further said.

Sue added that no previous knowledge, skills or training are required.

The facilitator of the workshops has been involved with Rhythmic Movement Training for several years, as well as other areas of Educational Kinesiology.

She holds a Diploma in Learning Disabilities Management and Child Psychology.

Rhythmic Movement Training, Sue elaborated, is a movementbased programme dedicated to bringing integration and balance to the brains and bodies of individuals with specific learning challenges, including ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, autistic spectrum disorders, developmental delay, Parkinson’s disease and stroke.

“It can also benefit people experiencing mild to severe emotional or behavioural issues, such as anxiety, panic, stress and general life overwhelm,” she explained. The practice originally evolved from studying the role of movement and reflex patterns in infants, and was developed by Swedish psychologist Dr Harald Blomberg.

These simple, natural movements have been modified into exercises, Sue emphasised, that provide an effective means of stimulating the body’s senses (touch, balance, proprioception) for greater awareness and integration.
