Over 100 junior golfers compete in Miri tourney

MIRI: Suzairi Iqmah Rahim from Sabah Golf Club scored 155 points to win the overall championsh­ip title at the 10th KGM Junior Amateur Open Championsh­ip yesterday.

He beat out 104 other junior golfers who vied for the Datuk Sebastian Ting Chal lenge Trophy.

The two- day event was at Kelab Golf Miri ( KGM) from June 910.

Runner- up and third place went to KGM Miri junior golfer Jordan Lim ( 161 points) and Aziel Teo (162).

The Most Hardworkin­g Golfer title was claimed by Angel Lim Wan Yong.

The annual golf tournament for boys and girls under the age of 18 was sanctioned by Sarawak Golf Associatio­n (SGA).

Tournament patron Datuk Sebastian Ting said the past ten years of the event was a decade of excellence for the junior golfers.

“The junior golfer tournament invitat ions were extended to junior gol fers throughout the country and neigbourin­g count ries such as Brunei , Singapore and China,” he said during the dinner ceremony held at Dynasty Hotel yesterday night.

Moreover, he said the number of junior golfers registered for this year was the highest recorded to date.

Among the golf clubs which participat­ed in the championsh­ip were Labuan Golf Club, Kinabalu Gol f Club, Panaga Gol f Club, Sarawak Golf Club, Dalit Bay Golf Club, KGM Malga, Keningau Golf Club and Education Golf Training Centre.

There was no entry fee for the tournament but funds collected during the tournament was given to the Miri Autism Associatio­n.

Organizing chairman Jeremy Ting, who also spoke at the event, hoped that some of the junior golfers would eventually compete in the 2016 Sukma to be held in Sarawak.

“There are some of our golfers who already proved themselves in the golf arena both locally and internatio­nally,” he said.
