-

A 46-year- old man suspected of impersonating a police officer to deceive an Indonesian couple of their money was arrested at 8pm on Tuesday.

The alleged impostor from Kuching who had previous criminal records was arrested in a hotel room in Wong King Huo Road.

The police, acting on a tip- off, found in his possession a fake police identification card, a handphone and a laptop.

He has been placed under a fourday remand since yesterday.

On Sept 6, a 41-year- old Indonesian man lodged a police report accusing the suspect of running off with RM1,800 of his money.

According to the man, he was stopped by the suspect who claimed to be a police officer at about 9.30am the same day at Sibu Central Market.

The suspect allegedly told the Indonesian that he was looking for him to assist the police in the investigation of criminal cases.

The Indonesian was also asked to surrender his passport and cash to the suspect. When told that he wanted to talk to his (the suspect’s) superior, he went off.

In a separate incident, two men suspected of stealing two gas cylinders from a vehicle parked in Kampung Datuk here were arrested at 7am yesterday.

The suspects, in their 20s, were arrested at two different houses in Kampung Nangka.

The duo were suspected to have gone to the vehicle on two motorcycles at 3.30am yesterday and left on one motorcycle with two gas cylinders from the vehicle.

Following a report lodged by the vehicle owner, the police found an abandoned motorcycle near the vehicle.

They managed to trace the owner of the motorcycle, and subsequently, arrested the two suspects.
