Shin Yang doing its bit for planted forest in a ‘big’ way

-

Shin Yang Group of Companies planted 213 million trees from 2010 to 2013 to help the state government achieve its one million hectares of planted forest target by 2020.

Its group executive director James Ling Lu Kiong said Shin Yang hoped to add at least another 70 million trees this year.

He said the company started its `e- profile’ initiative in 2009, and this resulted in 10 million trees planted in 2010.

In 2011, it managed to plant 49 million trees, 2012 (over 70 million trees), and in 2013 ( 84 million trees).

“It is our responsibility to preserve and hand- over nature to our future generations. Shin Yang does not only want to preserve, we aim to expand more green areas in Sarawak.”

Ling said this at Sirim’s ceremony to present the Forest Management ( Forest Plantation) certification to Shin Yang Plywood Sdn Bhd and Chain of Custody (COC) certification to Shin Yang Plywood ( Bintulu) Sdn Bhd at Imperial Hotel Miri yesterday.

The event is a milestone for Shin Yang for it makes Shin Yang the first forest plantation operator in the country to get such certifications.

“With this certification, we now carry a bigger responsibility to upkeep sustainable, social, and environmental- friendly operation towards the worldwide market.”

Currently, the certified planted forest for Sirim’s FMPC0001 is at Kuala Baram Miri, covering an area of about 1,007ha. Shin Yang aims to get certifications for all their License Planted Forests soon.

“To utilise and supply the Certified Forest Resources in a proper way without mixing with other materials, Chain of Custody (COC) is there to make sure that our customers will get the right products made from certified timber as requested,” said Ling.

Shin Yang Group of Companies chairman Tan Sri Datuk Ling Chiong Ho and SIRIM International Sdn Bhd managing director Khalidah Mustafa were among those present.
