‘Discipline, burning desire key to academic success’
The ability to maintain high discipline and having the burning desire to excel are two key ingredients that will help students find success in life.
When delivering an educational talk to some 200 students of SMK Sibu Jaya, Sibu and pupils from nearby primary schools over the weekend, Sarawak Dayak Graduates Association ( SDGA) president Dr Dusit Jaul said maintaining strong discipline would help the students to excel in their studies.
Having strong aspiration to be successful would fire their commitment and motivation to strive for success, he added.
He elaborated at great length on the need for students to uphold a high level of discipline at all times, in particular day-students who were exposed daily to the surrounding environment that could easily distract their focus.
“Maintaining a high level of selfdiscipline will guard them against the temptation to be involved in undesirable activities. To succeed, students must also have that burning desire to excel - first as a student and later as a career person.
“They must wake up to the reality that in the knowledge economy that we are part of nowadays, there is a high premium on individuals who have education, knowledge and skills. Those without will just pass their ways,” Dusit told the students and parents in attendance.
Parents were also reminded to take a more serious approach to their children’s education and not leaving everything entirely to the school.
He encouraged parents to establish closer rapport with school management and play an active role as members of the parent-teacher associations.
“Excellent education is such that it requires collective effort and joint responsibilities from all concerned, notably school management, parents as well as students themselves.
“I believe that if we put our mind, effort and heart into it, students can excel in public examinations. It is purely a matter of commitment from all involved,” he said.
Among those who attended the programme were students who will be sitting for their public examination. The programme was organised by SDGA in collaboration with Kelab Dayak PILA Sibu.
