Gary Chaw to launch Asian tour with concert in Beijing

-

Malaysian singer Gary Chaw, 35, is to launch his third Asian tour, titled I Am Gary Chaw, in Beijing on Nov 8 at the Mastercard Centre.

Gary, who is based in Taipei, hopes to reintroduce himself to his fans.

Gary and his children – Joe and Grace – were a huge hit when they starred in the reality show Where Are We Going, Dad?

He is now leveraging his newfound high profi le to make inroads in the highly lucrative market in mainland China.

Gary was a struggling singersongwriter before he appeared on two popular TV reality shows this year — I Am a Singer and Where Are We Going, Dad?

His powerful singing onstage and family life offstage drew rave reviews and an audience that recognised him both a singer and a father.

Deadpanned Gary: “I have been called a winner because I have a beautiful wife, two lovely children and a successful career. But I have to tell you that I was a loser and failed many times.”

Gay started his career more than a decade ago. When he fi rst moved to Taiwan 21 yeas ago, many record companies turned him down.

Without a good-looking image to attract eyes or a unique musical style to win over ears, Gary performed at bars, became alcoholic and suffered from depression.

In 2004, Taiwan composerproducer Michael Tu offered Chaw a contract under Rock Records, one of the most established record companies in Taiwan.

His big break came in 2008

I have been called a winner because I have a beautiful wife, two lovely children and a successful career. But I have to tell you that I was a loser and failed many times.

after he released the song, Superwoman, which earned him the title of Best Mandarin Male Singer at the 19th Golden Melody Awards. Since then, Gary has since released eight albums and written chart-topping songs for popular groups and singers, including S.H.E, Cyndi Wang and Aaron Kwok.

Gary, who was raised by his grandfather, received his early education in Canada and New Zealand. He said that his grandfather, who was a tai chi master, taught him to be strong and brave. This gave him the confidence to battle his worst times.

He said his two children, sixyearold son Joe and thee-yearold daughter Grace, are also his teachers and he is grateful to have a family of his own.

“Frankly, I have thought about quitting but I am still here. I quit drinking and I’ve never stopped writing songs,” he confessed.
