Village chief alerts family to fire

LAWAS: Six occupants including the village chief of Kampung Dato in Kuala Lawas escaped when his two- storey house was destroyed in a midnight fire on Sunday.

Village chief Durahman Bakar said he was alerted by a whiff of thick smoke and burning in the air blown by a fan.

Upon checking, he was shocked to find the front portion of his house on fire, prompting him to wake his wife and four grandchild­ren to save them from the flames.

Lawas Fire and Rescue Service chief Mohd Shamlie Radaee said a team of 13 officers and men led by Liew Yee Mee assisted the voluntary fire fighting unit of Kampung Pemukat in putting out the fire.

The operation was halted at 1.15 am with 80 per cent of the house destroyed.

The fire was prevented from spreading to a neighbouri­ng house.

Lawas District Officer Hussaini Hakim visited the scene with Limbang Division’s Welfare Department assistant director Goh Yong Kiet to hand over immediate aid.

Lawas District PWD engineer Norman Jan was at the scene to check the water pressure in Kuala Lawas while visiting the fire victims with Road Transport Department enforcemen­t chief Julaihee Dison to hand over their personal contributi­on.

Deputy PBB Bukit Sari chairman councillor Awangku Jinal Abidin Pengiran Jawa also handed assistance from Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environmen­t Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and wife Datuk Dayang Morliah Awang Daud,
