DBKU to mark Earth Hour at Square Tower

-

KUCHING: Kuching North City Commission ( DBKU) will observe Earth Hour 2015 at the Kuching Waterfront Square Tower this Saturday.

In conjunction with the event, several activities will be held from 6.30am to 11pm, while the main event of turning off all nonessential lights will take place at 8.30pm.

“This is the first time that we ( DBKU) are holding the Earth Hour to send a message to everyone on the dangers of global warning,” Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Wahap Abang Julai told a press conference yesterday.

He said the event hoped to educate and raise awareness among city dwellers of the importance of safeguarding the fragile environment and to keep the city clean.

DBKU would also hold a tree planting event as part of the Clean, Beautiful and Safe (CBS) initiative, he said, adding that it was part of the commission’s approach to engage with the people.

“Trees are an important aspect to keep our environment clean as it can process carbon monoxide from vehicles into oxygen,” he said.

Sarawak Energy Bhd will exhibit four electric vehicles while the Worldwide Fund for Nature, Rekajaya Go Green, Sara Urusharta Sdn Bhd and Plaza Merdeka will run information booths.

“Besides showing their support by turning up for this event, I also call upon everyone to switch off all electrical appliances and devices to observe this worldwide initiative,” added Abang Wahap.
