Show of unity during clean-up campaign at Tudan Muslim Cemetery

-

MIRI: It was a shining example of unity when SUPP secretarygeneral Datuk Sebastian Ting lended a helping hand during a ‘gotong-royong’ (work party) at Tudan Muslim Cemetery here yesterday.

The campaign was initiated by some 30 volunteers comprising villagers from Tudan and Sealine as well as members of the Pujut branch of Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas).

Ting, together with local Malay community leader Temenggung Abdul Rahman Fadzail, helped the do-gooders clean up the compounds within and surrounding the burial site, which has been in existence for the past 50 years.

However, Tudan Muslim Cemetery Committee chairman Suhaimi Obeng said not many Muslims here, especially those in Tudan, were aware of the place, given its rather isolated location deep in Kampung Tudan.

“The cemetery has been extended to measure more than 10 acres (four hectares) now, following approval from the state government to a request applied by Kampung Tudan chief Majenis Bakar five years ago.

“This burial ground is not only for Muslims in Tudan and Sealine, but also for those in Miri,” he said, adding that his committee could be contacted for burial arrangements.

“I understand that the Muslim cemetery at Sungai Baong in Krokop is now full. As such, the alternative is this one here,” he added.

The ‘gotong-royong’ yesterday was part of the committee’s monthly activities.

For burial arrangements and other related matters, Suhaimi can be reached at 010- 5964740.
