MARUDI: Victims of a fire at the 19- door Block C of Long Anap Longhouse, Upper Baram have received RM350 in aid per family from Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau.

The fire last Wednesday left over 250 residents homeless with estimated losses at RM700,000.

Most victims were unable to save any of their belongings as they were away harvesting rice in the fields.

Dennis said he would look into getting more aid for the fire victims and noted that Baram Member of Parliament Anyi Ngau had approved an RM100,000 minor rural project grant for building materials and another RM10,000 in cash as immediate aid.

Apologising to the longhouse folk for not visiting them earlier, he explained that he had asked Marudi District Officer Mackos Sibong to coordinate with the relevant agencies as soon as he heard the news.

He called on the relevant authorities to speed up disbursement of aid to the fire victims and called on the Education Department to accommodate all preschoolers who lost their homes in hostels where food is provided to enable them to continue with their education.

Dennis also suggested the fire victims pool their resources and work together to rebuild the razed longhouse.

Located a seven-hour journey by four-wheel drive vehicle from Miri, Long Anap is the longhouse of former Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry and former Baram Member of Parliament Datuk Jacob Dungau Sagan.
