Under-maintained, damaged facilities giving city bad name

- By Cindy Lai reporters@theborneopost.com

MIRI: Miri is celebrating its 10th anniversary as a city this year after its elevation in 2005.

However, the damaged and under-maintained public facilities like Miri City Council’s multistorey car park and the overhead bridge in front of the council’s building are giving the city a bad image and indeed require immediate attention from the local authority.

The dirty roof of the overhead bridge, dismantled plastic covers along the pathway and pots of wilting and dying Bougainvillea plants will surely leave a bad impression of the city on locals and tourists.

“The overhead bridge is one of the busiest bridges in the city as it is strategically located in the heart of the city, on a busy street. The current condition could be dangerous to pedestrians and urgent maintenance is required to protect the people,” a concerned Mirian who preferred to remain anonymous told The Borneo Post during a ground check to the areas mentioned.

Besides, he added, the plants along the pathway, which were supposed to enliven the scenery, were wilting and dying.

“I am sure the authority has spent a huge amount purchasing these plants. However, the main problems lie with the council’s Landscape Department which seems to be dysfunctional. We hope our taxpayers’ money don’t go wasted for something like this, if the council doesn’t bother to maintain it,” he said.
