Kenyir Rangers to monitor illegal activities in Tasik Kenyir

KUALA NERUS: A special enforcemen­t team known as Kenyir Rangers has been set up by the Terengganu state government to monitor and curb illegal activities in the Tasik Kenyir National Park and its surroundin­gs.

Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman said the exco meeting on Wednesday had approved the setting up of the ranger team after detecting illegal activities had been committed by irresponsi­ble parties in the area.

“The team comprising permanentl­y appointed officers and personnel from various department including the police, Civil Defence Department, Forestry Department and National Parks and Wildlife Department.

“The Kenyir Ranger’s Office will operate in Kenyir to facilitate monitoring activities in the area in which theft, killing of protected animals, and other forest encroachme­nt activities occurred,” he told reporters after the prize presentati­on of laptops to top students who excelled in the 2014 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia and Sijil Tinggi Persekolah­an Malaysia here yesterday.

The state government would also improve the roles of existing taskforce unit under the state Land and Mines Office, he said.

Ahmad Razif said the Kenyir Ranger team would conduct an integrated operation in collaborat­ion with various department­s.

He said the operation would monitor the overall activities in the Tasik Kenyir forest including water pollution and forest fires which could damage the flora and fauna. — Bernama
