KUCHING: Fifteen persons have been arrested in 14 raids targeting cyber gambling premises in the city so far this year.

District police chief ACP Roslan Bek Ahmad said the raids, codenamed Ops Dadu, saw seven of the suspects detained in February and the remaining eight earlier this month.

“The cyber gambling operators began quietly resuming their illegal activities in February, but we brought a halt to it and conducted six raids which resulted in seven arrests and the seizure of 92 computers and RM1,827 in cash,” he said, adding that eight further raids had been conducted this month following tip- offs from the public.

He explained that the successful strikes against cyber gambling outlets were due to a combination of intelligence gathering by police

“Additionally, we also cooperated with other agencies such as Sesco to cut the electricity and also water supplies to raiding premises to ensure that the operators are not able to re- open for business again,” Roslan told a press conference following a gathering to mark the 208th Police Day at district police headquarters here yesterday.

Touching on the crime index for Kuching, he revealed that the district recorded a 7.34 per cent drop in the number of reported cases from January 1 to March 23 this year compared to the same period last year.

He went on to state that the district had recorded a decline in the number of cases reported for five consecutive years starting from 2011, which saw the overall percentage drop by over 50 per cent.

“The crime index in 2011 declined 9.94 per cent compared to 2010, and dropped again by 13 per cent the following year ( 2012).

“In 2013, the index fell a further 20 per cent followed by a 18.43 per cent drop last year, bringing the overall decline over the years to over 50 per cent,” he added.
