SIBU: University College of Technology Sarawak ( UCTS) yesterday introduced its Corporate Talent Development (CTD) scheme which its chairman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said is to ensure that its graduates are highly employable and marketready.

“A total of 16 companies to date have agreed to participate in this scheme with UCTS.

“I hope that more companies will come forward to secure their future talent in collaboration with UCTS and guide the university in its development,” he said when officiating at ‘Sarawak Human Capital Development’ seminar held at UCTS.

Wong, who is Second Finance Minister and Minister of Local Government and Community Development, explained that the scheme allows industries to ‘adopt’ UCTS students at an early stage; provide training and industrial exposure; share human capital expertise or requirements with UCTS and give priority to employing the ‘adopted’ students upon graduation.

He said in support of the CTD scheme, UCTS introduced a Leadership Excellence Awards ( LEAd) for its students.

“LEAd is similar to Deans’ List awards but based on how active students are in co- curricular activities during their studies at UCTS,” he said.

“With LEAd, industries will be able to identify talents who are more all-rounded rather than just having academic performance.

“Apart from academic studies, UCTS students are encouraged to develop leadership skills through active involvement in various co- curricular activities.

“This is in line with what the Ministry of Education’s recent announcement that students’ CGPA in the future would not only be based on academic achievements,” he said.

At the seminar, Regional Corridor Development Authority ( Recoda) chief executive officer Tan Sri Datuk Amar Wilson Baya Dandot presented a topic ‘ Impact of SCORE on Sarawak’s Future’ while the director of Manpower Development Unit of the Chief Minister’s Department Dr Abdul Rahman Deen talked on ‘Sarawak Manpower Development Needs: How Schools Can Support the Manpower Sarawak’.

UCTS vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Abdul Hakim Juri touched on the topic ‘ UCTS Contribution for Sarawak Manpower Development’ and Oxford Business Group ( OBG) managing editor for Asia Paulius Kuncinas expounded his thoughts on ‘Reports on Sarawak Economy’.

At the function, Wong exchanged a memorandum of understanding with the companies involved in the CTD scheme.
