Folk rock legend Crosby drives into jogger

-

LOS ANGELES: Folk rock legend David Crosby drove his car into a jogger, causing injuries that required hospitalisation, after failing to see him in the sun, authorities said on Tuesday.

Crosby — a former member of the bands Crosby, Stills and Nash, and The Byrds, who were best known for a version of the 1960s anthem “Turn! Turn! Turn!” — hit the jogger on Monday evening in Santa Ynez, north of Los Angeles.

Crosby, who was driving 55 miles ( 90 kms) per hour, “did not see the male pedestrian directly ahead of him who was jogging toward the right side of the roadway,” a California Highway Patrol statement said.

The victim, 46-year- old Jose Jimenez, was airlifted by helicopter for injuries that included multiple fractures, but his life was not in danger, it said.

Crosby was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol and stopped immediately after the accident, it said.

A spokesman for Crosby said that the 73-year- old singersongwriter was “obviously very upset” but was “relieved that the injuries to the gentleman were not life threatening.”

“He wishes the jogger a very speedy recovery,” a statement said.

Crosby had repeated trouble as a younger man.

In 1985, he was arrested after driving into a fence and a year later he spent five months in a Texas jail on drug and gun charges.

He quit hard drugs soon after and has remained active in his 70s. Last year, he released his first studio album in 20 years.

Crosby — a prominent figure at the Woodstock festival in 1969 — has also remained outspoken on politics and performed in support of Occupy Wall Street demonstrators. — AFP
