MARUDI: The school is the best place to educate our children and develop their potentials.

The responsibility to turn them into useful persons lies of course with their teachers, said Bunsie Tunton, the new principal of SMK Temenggong Datuk Lawai Jau in Long San near here.

Bunsie gave this opinion in his welcoming speech at a dinner organised by the school in conjunction with the annual meeting of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) at Long San on Sunday night.

Bunsie, who took up the post of principal of the school three months ago, thus called on the teachers to do their best to help the school achieve excellent academic results.

He challenged them to improve the school’s result for Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) exam, now PT3, which was GPS 6.03 last year, and be the best among the five secondary schools in Baram.

Turning to parents, he told them that they too play an important role in helping their children do well in their studies.

On the school itself, he lamented that it lacked clean water supply and had unkempt toilets. To address this problem, he suggested that a gravity feed water supply system be built to draw water from a nearby waterfall.

He also said the school could be the only one in Sarawak without a computer lab. Besides that, he bemoaned the poor telecommunication there due to the absence of a telecommunication tower.

In summing up, he hoped the authorities would look into the shortcomings.

The dinner was graced by Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau. It was also attended by Baram education officer Yunos Apok and his deputy Jalong Wan, PTA chairman Alex Ubang Usang, Cr Simpson Njok Lenjau, Cr Charles Balan Seling and Penghulu Paul Kalang.

Dennis raised some RM500 for the golden voice performance when he sang a Malay song ‘Terima Kasih’.
