Lee: Upgrade road in complex to dual carriageway

-

MIRI: The clearance of visitors and travellers at the Sungai Tujoh Customs, Immigration and Quarantine ( CIQ) complex will be smoother and faster if Pandaruan Road within the complex is upgraded to a dual carriageway.

Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin made this comment after the Public Works Department (JKR) here immediately repaired the road after he made a complaint.

During his visit to the CIQ complex following numerous complaints from travellers that the road was giving them unpleasant and bumpy ride, Lee noted that the access road was riddled with potholes.

The repair works were completed last Saturday.

“They have done a good job as they gave quick and fast response in repairing the road. The traffic flow within the complex will be smoother if the road is upgraded to dual carriageway. Therefore, it is important that the department upgrade the standard of the road,” Lee said when contacted by The Borneo Post yesterday.

On another matter, the Senadin assemblyman requested the Immigration Department to consider increasing manpower and opening up more counters for faster and smoother clearance of vehicles and travellers going through the complex.

“Statistics show that last year more than three million visitors went through the complex. With this figure, the department must open up more counters and put more officers. The current three counters are not sufficient to handle the inf lux of visitors and vehicles going through the complex during holidays and weekends,” said Lee.

Meanwhile, Lee said the demolition work of the old buildings and other structure in the complex were continued after he requested Sarawak Energy Berhad ( SEB) disconnect the power supply to the buildings.

Lee also requested Immigration Department and Miri City Council ( MCC), upon completion of the demolition and clearing of the area, to improve the landscape and beautify the area.

He also requested MCC to erect a welcoming arch as the complex is one of the gateways to Sarawak.
