A mother donates her brain-dead daughter’s kidney

-

KUCHING: It was a very difficult decision to make but a mother agreed in the end to donate her dead daughter’s internal organ to Sarawak General Hospital ( SGH) so that others could live.

Annie Jimis, 49, from Matang Jaya said she gave her consent to doctors at the hospital to take whatever organs so that others could use them.

She said the doctors only took her kidney.

Originally from Kampung Masaan in Siburan near here Annie said the family was sad to have lost someone they loved but if they could help to save someone else’s life that would be a great relief.

She said her daughter Jodie Lau, 25, and an uncle met with a self- accident when going out for a dinner on March 18.

She said her daughter who was riding pillion lost consciousness and was admitted to SGH while her uncle only suffered scratches on the arms.

“Since then she never regained consciousness and the doctors said she suffered from head injuries and was brain dead. They said there was nothing they could do to save her and asked if we were willing to donate any of her organs.

“They gave me time to think it over and after talking to my other family members we finally agreed to donate her organs. It is of course a very difficult decision to make but if it can be of help to others why not,” she told reporters at the hospital mortuary yesterday.

She said her late daughter, the second sibling in a family of four, died at 9.40am Tuesday and her remains were released from the mortuary and brought to St Joseph’s Church yesterday for a funeral service before being buried at the Christian Cemetery at Mile 7.

Meanwhile, hospital officials said this was the third organ donation they received so far this year and hoped more people would do the same, taking this as an example.
