SRDC team on walkabout to inspect projects

SIBU: Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) deputy chairman Oliver Kuo and his team were yesterday in the thick of action, looking into matters that would enhance the lives of the 28,000 people under its jurisdiction.

According to a statement from Sibu Jaya, the team comprising councillors and officers spent the day inspecting ongoing development and talking to the people, developers and contractors on matters related to Sibu Jaya’s infrastructure and social development.

Stressing that a new road under the Master Re-planning was being built to link SK Sibu Jaya with the main West Boulevard, Kuo said the contractor concerned had been told to speed up work.

“While the contractor concerned is making good progress, we are hoping that they can get it done within the second quarter of this year so that teachers, parents and students can have a nicer drive,” Kuo said.

Pertaining to the putting up of signage to warn people against swimming in the ponds within the township, he said the authorities knew that the developer had been putting up many notice boards.

Kuo lamented that some had been stolen or damaged by irresponsible people.

“But that has not deterred the authorities from asking the developer, who has kindly continued to put up more warning signage,” he said.

“We must protect our children at all cost,” he added.

“For our children’s sake, we must all work together. We cannot give up. Teachers and parents who are very influential figures in a children’s life can help drill into the children’s psyche the dangers of swimming in areas not meant for swimming,” he stressed.

On residential development in Sibu Jaya, Kuo was pleased that the contractor and the developer for Pearl Avenue Phases I and II had gone beyond what was required of them in the provision of green space.

Instead of just an open field, the developer had created a landscaped garden with walking tracks, while the contractor sponsored playground facilities.

He said these efforts were worthy of emulation, which he hoped would be replicated throughout Sibu Jaya’s residential and commercial development.

“I am very optimistic about the future of Sibu Jaya and I see it growing at an even quicker pace within the next few years,” Kuo enthused.
