Duty-free island Labuan switches off lights for Earth Hour Saturday

LABUAN: The town of this duty-free island, government buildings, hotels, food and drinks premises and school boards will be switching off the lights, to join the global event of Earth Hour 2015.

Beginning 8.30 pm- 9.30 pm on Saturday, all non essential lighting and electrical appliances are encouraged to be shut off and the local authorities are encouraging local residents and businesses to follow suit.

Labuan Corporation ( LC) senior public relations officer Jahmurniwaty Markum said while they would be turning off the lights in non emergency and non essential administrative areas, it would not impact public safety.

Residents are reminded to report crimes or get assistance from the police, if they come across any criminal activities.

Labuan police chief Supt Adzhar Othman said patrolling teams would be deployed around the town as crime preventive measures.

Dorsett Grand Labuan Hotel general manager Alfred Paulsen said the hotel was in collaboration with Labuan Education Department and Department of Environment ( DOE) to promote environmental awareness among the secondary students.

“Students are encouraged to discuss Earth Hour and deepen their knowledge on environmental issues, and the lights in our hotel will be going out this Saturday, as we observe the Earth Hour,” he told Bernama yesterday.
