60 secondary students attend nature education camp at national park

MIRI: Some 60 secondary students converge at Lambir Hills National Park here today for a three- day nature education camp.

They were from SMK Merbau, SMK Taman Tunku, SMK Baru, SMK Luak, SMK St Joseph, SMK Chung Hua, SMK Dato Permaisuri and SM Sains Miri.

The committee’s advisor Lita Adam said a total of 15 teachers from various schools would also be involved in the camp.

“Shell Malaysia Upstream Communicat­ions senior manager Shanton Mowe has been invited to officiate the closing ceremony on Sunday.”

Fully sponsored by Shell, the event was organised by a nature camp committee: ‘Jawatankua­sa Kem Mesra Alam’ ( KMA).

The KMA, headed by Shell, was set up in 2001 with the collaborat­ion of eight agencies, namely, Sarawak Shell Bhd, Miri District Education Office, Sarawak Forestry Department, Sarawak Forestry Corporatio­n, Natural Resources and Environmen­t Board northern region, Department of Environmen­t Miri branch, Miri City Council and Northern Sarawak Journalist­s Associatio­n (NSJA).

“KMA was set up to educate school students on their roles and raise awareness on the importance of preserving the environmen­t.

“Todate, more than 3,000 students in Miri have attended the camp. We have successful­ly trained 35 teachers to facilitate the modules of the nature education camp.”

The modules used by KMA are recognised by the government and used by the education ministry as a nature education model at school level statewide.

This camp has been described as the most successful nature education camp in the state.
