Sultan of Perak signs condolence book for Kuan Yew
KUALA LUMPUR: The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, yesterday signed the condolence book for the first prime minister of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew who died on Monday.
Sultan Nazrin Shah signed the book at the Singapore High Commission here. His Royal Highness was welcomed by Singapore High Commissioner to Malaysia Vanu Gopala Menon.
The sultan, in his message, conveyed condolences to the family of Kuan Yew and the people of Singapore, and said: “Lee Kuan Yew was a leader of vision who founded and nurtured a country. The world has lost a great statesman.”
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein also signed the condolence book, expressing condolences to Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who is a son of Kuan Yew, and his family as well as the people of Singapore.
“Mr Lee Kuan Yew will always be remembered and will continue to inspire many in our region for generations to come,” he wrote.
Sharing an experience, Hishammuddin said Kuan Yew could easily find out if a person had just had a cigarette.
“As a smoker, it worried me every time I met up with him. So I made sure I had my (mouth) freshener and perfume ready because he will make it very clear when he smells smoke in the air,” he said.
Hishammuddin said he had high regard for the wisdom, hard work and determination of Kuan Yew, which he said should be emulated by generations to come.
Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yaakob, several members of parliament and foreign envoys based in Malaysia also signed the condolence book.
