Students urged to take active part in sports
SIBU: Pupils of SK Bandaran No. 2 were yesterday told to participate actively in sports to shape their characters and consolidate national unity.
Chairman of the school board of management Temenggong Vincent Lau Lee Ming in giving the advice, said sports could be the best catalyst for national unity.
“Sports bring together people from all walks of life and help to promote racial harmony,” he said at the opening of the school’s annual sports meet at Tun Zaidi Stadium here.
He said it was apparent that the whole nation rejoiced and cheered for sports personalities such as Datuk Lee Chong Wei and Pandelela Rinong and were proud of their success and achievements in the international arena.
“It is my hope that the sports meet today can also achieve similar spirit of camaraderie and unity within the community of SK Bandaran Sibu No 2.”
Lau also touched on the importance of organising the school-level sports meet, saying it was through such avenue that future world-class athletes were unearthed. He said Sarawak produced many best athletes in the country and therefore had to constantly expand the state’s pool of potential sports champions who would shine in the international arena.
He said this was also in line with the country ‘1Student1Sport’ policy which was an effective means to enhance one’s health and shape one’s character.
“In the long run, this will help recognise one’s sports talents and develop the potential of athletes to the fullest,” he added.
Lau also commended the organising committee for their perseverance and efforts in promoting track and field events as parts of the school extracurricular activities.
He concurred that it was hard to get the pupils to take part in active sports due to their big commitments such as tuition classes, extra classes and other academic programmes.
Earlier, headmaster Thomas Tang reminded the pupils to work hard and strive to bring glory to the school at the divisional level meet.
