MIRI: Sarawak Shell Berhad ( SSB) reaffi rmed its commitment to sustain their success story of over a century in Sarawak by investing significantly in a wide range of corporate social responsibility ( CSR) and sustainable development initiatives (SDI).

Its general manager, Chok Chee Tsong said they will continue to focus in areas of health, safety and the environment besides in capacity building, education and community welfare, and arts and culture.

“We are a stakeholder in the continued success and development of Sarawak and a partner in Sarawak’s progress – most notably here in Miri. We are a part of this community and this community is a part of us,” Chok said yesterday.

He was speaking at the launch of the tree planting ceremony at the Piasau Nature Reserve, ( PNR) by Assistant Minister for Sports and Communications, Datuk Lee Kim Shin, which was held in conjunction with the Borneo Jazz festival which starts today.

Chok added that tree planting has long been a tradition of Shell and planting the trees at PNR - the former Piasau camp, a residential area of Shell employees was even more meaningful.

“In May last year, Shell Malaysia worked in partnership with the Sarawak government and Petronas to repurpose this land formerly used for petroleum operations into a biodiversity haven and hornbill sanctuary within the city limits. PNR is a legacy we will want to leave behind for the environment and the local community,” he assured.

A total of 60 native Sarawak tree seedlings namely Eugenia grandis ( Ubahlaut/ Bungkang) and Pometiannata (kasai) species sponsored by Sarawak Forestry were planted at the nature reserve.

Among the 150 people who took part were Miri Resident Antonio Kahti Galis, Miri City Council mayor Lawrence Lai, Sarawak Forestry Corporation regional manager Abang Arabi Abang Aiman and Sarawak Tourism Board ( STB) director – events and corporate relations Angelina Patricia Bateman.
