Indian society to hold diabetes seminar
KUCHING: The Sarawak Indian Society ( SIS) will hold a diabetes awareness seminar on Sunday ( May 10) at the Indian Association Kuching building at Rock Road from 8am to 1.30pm.
SIS founder and advisor Jacob Sebastian urged the public to attend to learn more about prevention of diabetes.
“This is part of our social activities to tell the people about diabetes, which is a silent killer and we hope the public will come to this useful seminar,” he told a press conference yesterday.
The speakers are Malaysia Diabetes Association Sarawak chapter chairman Dr William Voon ( diabetes - silent killer), retired nutritionist Hung Man Ming ( correct nutrition), Sarawak General Hospital dietician Khalilah Hassan ( healthy diet), Dr Uma Devi ( alternative medicine), and yoga guru Arjuna Chan Jack San ( yoga posture – stabilising metabolism).
Quoting Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam, Sebastian said Indians and Malays have been found to lack a sense of awareness on healthy diet and healthcare.
He also quoted Dr Voon as saying that almost six million or 21 per cent of Malaysians are suffering from diabetes, with more younger people becoming victims.
“Under these circumstances, SIS decided to do something about it, and this seminar is the result,” he said.
Meanwhile, SIS president Piara Singh Gill thanked the sponsors for donations in the form of food and cash.
