SARIKEI: The local community, particularly youths, are urged to develop further the agriculture sector in order to achieve the division's mission of making it the state's ' food basket'.

Assistant Minister of Agriculture ( Research and Marketing) Datuk Mong Dagang also urged them to make the agriculture sector their major business on par with other business entities.

“This is in line with the government's desire to transform agriculture into a dynamic, modern and competitive sector.

“Based on the concept of 'agriculture is business', there are vast opportunities for agriculture entrepreneurs to encourage interaction and exchange knowledge among farmers and society in general,” he said when officiating at ‘ Usahawan Tani' (agriculture entrepreneurs) seminar here yesterday.

The seminar was held in conjunction with ‘Borneo Fruits and Pineapple Festival' at the civic centre here.

From the tourism perspective, Mong, who is Bukit Begunan assemblyman, said the government hoped to create a platform to develop and promote Sarikei as a popular eco-tourism destination.

On the seminar, he said it was necessary to provide opportunities for agriculture entrepreneurs to improve their knowledge and skills.

“Besides, they can share their experience to improve themselves, their entrepreneurship and development of the local agriculture industry,” he said.

Eight topics were presented during the two-day seminar.

There was also an exhibition of agriculture produce and products.

Resident Dahim Nadot was among those present at the function.
