MIRI: The presentation of awards to outstanding students should be made an annual affair in recognition of their hard work and success in both academics and co- curriculum.

Lambir assemblyman Ripin Lamat said this would also encourage and motivate other students, who were weak in their studies, to strive harder so that they could become award recipients too.

“It also enlivens the spirit of teachers as educators, in their dedication and determination to implement educational programmes for the younger generation,” he said at the ‘Excellence Awards Presentation Ceremony’ hosted by SMK St Columba Miri yesterday.

Ripin’s text of speech was delivered by Deputy Miri District Education Department Officer Alias Ngah.

The assemblyman commended SMK St Columba Miri for its initiative to hold the event, which showed their concern for its students.

Nevertheles, he advised award recipients against complacency, as they must continue attaining even better results in their studies.

Ripin also hoped that the school would carry on with its educational programmes and other related activities in maintaining its status as one of high-performing schools in this division.

A total of 292 students, from Transition Class to Form 5, received awards in various categories at the ceremony.

The event was attended by Board of SMK St Columba Miri chairman Hubert Kelon, principal Meechang Tuie, parents-teachers association chairman Lim Swee Huat, alumni chairman Karambir Singh and Samling Group representative Andrew Wee.
