SMK Shoaw kings of Kuching school rugby

KUCHING: SMK Agama Sheikh Othman Abdul Wahab ( Shoaw) once again showed that they are the kings of Kuching school rugby when they swept the Boys’ Under-18 and Under-15 titles at the Kuching Rugby Footbal l Club ( KRFC) Schools Rugby Sevens at Song Kheng Hai pitch yesterday.

Shoaw A blanked SMK Muara Tuang 28- 0 in the Boys’ U18 final to lift the trophy while their U15 team were victorious in the Cup final that was played earlier.

Luck was certainly on Shoaw A’s side as they defeated MRSM B 1- 0 in a sudden death penalty shootout.

Deadlocked 10-10 at full- time, the sudden death penalty shootout ensued with MRSM B failing to convert while Shoaw made no mistake in their turn to take the penalty kick.

They earned more honours as M. Nur Haqim Raden was adjudged Best Player in the U18 Cup final while M. Ashamuddin Naim Aziz won the award in the Boys’ U15 Cup final.

I am very happy with the double victory. Congratula­tions to my players and I believe the rugby culture in our school has worked wonders and it has gotten the players to win this tournament.

Head coach Zulkaranai­nhisham Sarbini was ecstatic with his triumphant boys.

“I am very happy with the double victory. Congratula­tions to my players and I believe the rugby culture in our school has worked wonders and it has gotten the players to win this tournament,” he said.

“Our rugby developmen­t is going very well and we now have good teams for the U13 to U18 competitio­ns.”

Last weekend, his U16 and U15 teams faced off in the final of the Bintulu Rugby 10s, with the senior team triumphing over the junior side.

“And this weekend, they proved their worth again to win the U18 and U15 titles and I am proud of that. It shows that we are still the rugby powerhouse in Kuching (schols),” he added.

Zulkaranai­nhisham also had praise for their rivals, saying that teams like SMK Tebedu, SMK Asajaya, MRSM and SMK Muara Tuang had improved a lot. “MRSM are now on the same level as Shoaw and Kolej Abdillah and nowadays, the competitio­n is getting more competitiv­e,” he noted.

Meanwhi le, SMK Asajaya captured the Boys U18 Plate by edging Kolej A 7- 5 in the final while SMK Tebedu claimed the Boys’ U15 Plate after beating Shoaw C 5- 0.

In the Boys’ U18 Bowl final, SMK Tebedu beat Kolej Vokasional Matang A 10- 5 while winner of the Boys’ U15 Bowl final was Kolej B who defeated Shoaw B 7- 0.

Two hundred and forty- eight players from 24 teams took part in the two- day tournament organised by KRFC.
