Cloudy skies, thunderstorms expected today
KUCHING: Intermittent rain, occasionally heavy, in some areas early morning yesterday threatened to revive the ghost of flooding again but the weatherman has forecast mostly cloudy skies in the next 48 hours from yesterday evening.
However, widely scattered thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and evening with isolated thunderstorms in the morning.
With receding flood waters, only three relief centres are still open as of noon yesterday, accommodating 16 families and 67 victims in Serian Division.
State Civil Defence Department (JPAM) public relations officer Siti Huzaimah Ibrahim, who revealed this, said two families and 10 victims were at the relief centre at Balai Raya Koran who had to be evacuated following a landslide near their homes few days ago.
The two other relief centres are Balai Raya Slabi Entungkuh (five families and 21 victims) and Surau Darul Hadhari Kampung Rimba Padi (nine families and 36 victims).
“According to report, the water level in Serian is receding and the weather is fine. However the water is receding slowly in Kampung Slabi Entungkuh. The houses here are lower than the road level,” she said yesterday.
State Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba) director Nor Hisham Muhamad said if any school or other public facilities required their assistance, they could make requests directly to the nearest Bomba station.
“Our personnel are ready to give assistance. Today (yesterday) our personnel are cleaning up SK St Dominic in Serian which was affected by flood,” he said.
He urged members of the public to come forward to assist the community such as in doing cleaning-up if they have the time.
