Be wary of two conmen targeting hotels – Association

-

SIBU: The Sarawak Central Region Hotel Association has warned hoteliers here about two men snooping around hotels to con counter staff, with the modus operandi of collecting money on the request of the hotel’s owner.

Urging all hoteliers to be alert, its chairman Johnny Wong Sie Lee said one of its members had fallen prey to the two Foochow-speaking men, losing about RM450, while the con men had hit three other budget hotels but without success as the staff called their owners to verify their claim.

“Yesterday ( Sunday), these individuals went to several hotels using the same modus operandi. So, I appeal to members and nonmembers to be extra careful on this matter to avoid falling victim,” Wong said yesterday, adding that these two men started prowling hotels some two days ago.

He said in the scam, the men collected the money using other people’s MyKad.

He further disclosed that a CCTV had captured the images of these two prowlers and they were in the midst of handing it over to police for investigation.

Wong reminded hoteliers to notify the police if they noted any suspicious characters loitering at their premises.

He also urged members who had CCTV monitoring to ensure that they are functioning.

“Switch them on and not install them for ‘show’ only. You can be for sure these individuals will be caught in the act if they enter the premises.”
