Action key to realising goals, youths told
MIRI: Action is what separates wishful thinkers from those who strive to turn their ideas into reality.
Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau, who said this prior to declaring open the annual division-level Secondary Schools Sports Council ( MSSM) track and field championships yesterday, further stated that while everyone could have the knowledge, inspiration and even talent, nothing would happen if they did not do anything.
“Inspiration must lead to action. It takes commitment to turn one’s imagination into reality,” Dennis spoke before the student athletes and guests, including Miri Education officer Dr Hassan Hasbillah and event organising chairman Koh Chee Kiat, who is SMK Pujut principal.
Thirty- one secondary schools from across this division are taking part in the sports meet.
Adding on, Dennis said being clear about one’s purpose in life would ‘put you in the top five per cent of the human population – the high achievers’.
“Once you decide on and plan specific steps towards your goals and then execute them, you would reach that coveted one per cent spot.”
Dennis also told the youths here to dismiss that when it came to success and high achievements, talent was the sole contributing factor.
“Talent is among the key factors; not the single key factor.
“A study — published after years of research on 120 top artists, athletes and scholars — shows that success is more about drive and determination; instead of just being about having great talent.
“At school level, our goal is to obtain good education or be trained with specific skills in order for us to get jobs and attain steady income later on.”
Moreover, Dennis warned the youngsters about the danger of being involved in social ills such as drug abuse, truancy and gluesniffing, as they could jeopardise their future.
“This also includes smoking, which may seem trivial but it can actually lead to worse things. Stay away from all these things,” he stressed.
The MSSM outing will conclude this Friday.
