MIRI: The project to upgrade facilities and beautify North Yu Seng Road for tourism purposes will be handed to the Miri Resident Office to implement.

Miri City Council ( MCC) mayor Lawrence Lai told reporters after chairing the full council meeting on Monday that MCC would assist from the technical and engineering aspects, including appointing a consultant and contractor.

Responding to speculations on the social media, Lai said, “It is true the Minister of Tourism, Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, approved an allocation of RM5 million last year to upgrade North Yu Seng Road to a tourism corridor. However, the official name for the project has not confi rmed yet, but the council all this while regarded that area as a tourism corridor.”

He added that some RM500,000 from the grant would be used to, among others, finance the project’s launching ceremony and to appoint a project consultant proposal.

“It is too early to talk further on this project. The contractor has not been appointed and the project has not started.”

On unlicensed hawkers along North Yu Seng Road’s concrete path, he said at a dialogue session conducted last week to solve disputes between Bumiputera Traders Association of Miri ( PBMS) and Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chamber ( DUBS) Miri on stall lots along the path.

He said MCC had agreed to allocate only 30 stall lots, with PBMS Miri and DUBS Miri getting equal share.

“At the moment, we only have only issued licences to three food operators in the area. They have been trading in the area for about 10 years already.”

For the 30 stalls, he explained the licences would be temporary ones, and the hawkers would have to give way when the project started.
