GEORGE TOWN: Universiti Sains Malaysia ( USM) and Nagaoka University of Technology ( NUT), Japan have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in the field of research and technology.

USM Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Omar Osman said, the collaboration involved joint research activities, student and academic exchanges and numerous joint seminars.

“The MoU marks a significant development in the successful collaboration of both universities since 12 years ago, when NUT engaged USM as part of the 30 global programmes.

“The collaboration has resulted in the double PhD Programme and we are also expecting the joint Master in Radiation Physics, to be finalised,” he said in his speech at the opening of USM-NUT Gigaku Techno Park (GTP) office here, yesterday.

Meanwhile he said the establishment of GTP office at USM provided a conduit to solicit research grants from Japanese multinationals in Malaysia and the region. Dr Omar said this indirectly provided better opportunities for problem based research work and ultimately technology transfer to the related industries.

The MoU was signed by NUT president, Dr Nobuhiko Azuma; Toray Industries managing director, Hiroshi Yoshimura and consul- general of Consulate General of Japan in Penang, Ryuji
