KUCHING: The army is currently recruiting personnel for its 31st Border Brigade to provide a systematic approach on security along the SarawakKalimantan border.

First Malaysian Infantry Division commander Major General Datuk Stephen Mundaw said they were targeting at least 1,800 personnel for the first phase of the recruitment drive.

The target is to have at least 5,000 personnel to be stationed at all key areas along the borders in Sarawak and Sabah.

“This is the best chance for Sarawakian and Sabahan youths to join the army. They can start by becoming an army volunteer (Askar Wataniah) first before being absorbed as regular soldiers or join the 31st Border Brigade,” Stephen told a press conference after officiating at the 83rd Army Day at Kem Penrissen here yesterday.

themselves, the recruits would have to undergo the army’s fundamental training before deployment.

On another note, Stephen said security along the Sarawak- Kalimantan border was currently under the control of a joint initiative between the army, police, immigration and customs.

Meanwhile, the army’s Civic Action Programme (CAP) or Jiwa Murni programme which started three years ago will conclude this year.

“So far, the army has carried out more than 180 activities under the programme leaving about 30 activities to be carried out this year,” he said.

After this year, the army would come up with a new programme to ensure the continuity of being closer to the people and the government.

“It is our responsibility to help the people,” said Stephen, adding that among the CAP projects to be done this year would be to build four roads and the building of houses for army veterans.

Touching on the 83rd Army Day yesterday, he said the main event was being held in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan which was declared open by the army chief General Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor.

A total of 130 officers and 1,200 personnel of other ranks took part in the parade despite the morning drizzle.
